Why did you join the Marine Corps?
"I joined the Marine Corps mainly because I didn’t really think I had a choice. My grades weren’t all that great and I wanted to join the military anyway, so I decided for the Corps."
Describe Sangin for someone back home:
"When we first got here we were expecting sand, of course, like everyone expects sand in Afghanistan, and then we come here to the green zone. Like, we knew we were gonna come into something green, but we didn’t understand how green it was gonna be. You know, the reeds now are twelve feet tall and there’s bamboo that’s even taller than that."
What does rigorous patrolling do to your body?
"I didn’t notice it at first, but, the other Marines in my squad noticed and in other squads noticed, I had lost a shit ton of weight, and you can see it yourself—I’m extremely skinny—and I just kept losing more and more weight.
So from a food perspective all I could do was think of food, and that’s still all I do. On patrol, we’ll take a quick break every now and then, you know post security, and I’ll just be sitting there thinking 'God I’m so fucking hungry.'"
What's it like to move through the terrain?
"Moving around is completely demoralizing sometimes, like, you won’t even go through a canal sometimes and you’ll just be drenched, and you’ll know it’s just your own juice . . . like I say, you’re just drenched in your own juice, your own sweat."
What do you think about the Taliban?
"Every now and then we’ll hit one of them, but because they’re so small and unnoticeable, you know, they blend into the environment, they blend into all the other locals, everyone pretty much looks the same to us, that we can’t really . . . we don’t have a
